Intertextuality #6/Robin Pecknold Live in Seattle

A man walks barefoot into an open field, shovel strapped to his back. Stopping to look up into the setting sun, he slowly swings the shovel and grips it firmly in his rough hands. He begins to dig.

Clouds move apocalyptically over his head as he burrows deeper into the ancient soil. Hours roll by, but he doesn't tire. Stopping occasionally to look up at the slowly disappearing sky, the man begins to hum. Softly at first, his voice rough from disuse, he attempts to hold a tune.

After days of labor the man stops abruptly. He looks up but can no longer see the sky. Bending down, his knees creak and snap, nearly disintegrating beneath him. The man reaches down into the cool earth and spreads his fingers out; he feels millions of years sink under his fingernails.

Cupping a distinctly dark patch of dirt, the man lifts it to his face, breathes deeply and swallows it whole. It burns down his throat. He looks up and the sky is above him once more. The man begins to sing loudly, the ancient melodies come forth unattended by thought or memory.

New Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes?)

Robin Pecknold, August 7th, 2010 from tim hoyt on Vimeo.

It is always worth the time to listen to a new Pecknold tune, especially live cuts. The man commands a presence on the stage that stuns crowds. Here he is in Portland performing an untitled tune that may or may not be on the new Fleet Foxes record due to fall this fall. As usual, it's good.

Fleet Foxes Documentary

[via]

Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes has a brother named Sean Pecknold who makes movies. He has made a Fleet Foxes tour documentary. Please watch it.
Talent such as Robin Pecknold possess is hard to come by. And as far as tour documentaries go, this one nearly perfectly captures the purity, profundity, and at times light spirit of Robin’s musical demeanor. The video was directed and produced by Robin’s brother Sean Pecknold who is nearly a god in his own regard. You’d have seen at least a few of his videos for such bands as Grizzly Bear and Beach House.

B-Sides from Fleet Foxes

According to my sources, Fleet Foxes should have a new album coming our way in September of this year. If you are like me, the turn towards Spring has led to an increased desire for Pecknold's golden voice. Well thirst no more, my friends! Here are a few rare tracks that I dug up the past few weeks.

"Isles" is a beautiful track from an earlier single release. "Silver dagger" is a an old folk ballad. I have no idea where "Icicle Tusk" comes from (somewhere cold?).

First Aid Kit Cover Fleet Foxes

The Swedish Duo First Aid Kit also recently did another video for La Blogotheque walking around outside and playing music. Easily one of the best Fleet Foxes covers I have ever seen.

Why Sasquatch is Going to be Amazing

Sasquatch! Has Been Found!
(I totally took this photo...Word.)

Well, Sara, Robbie and I are heading off to Sasquatch. We are planning to take a lot of photos and not all of us are going to the exact same shows so hopefully we can put together a few posts that are relatively representative of the whole festival for those unfortunate souls unable to attend. I haven't been to Sasquatch for four years and the last time I went, it hailed and my tent flooded and I missed the Shins. Lets hope nothing like that happens this time. Here is a taste (via past P4k festivals) of what a few of this years Sasquatch acts sound (and look) like performing at festivals.

Grizzly Bear's album is set to come out the day after Sasquatch ends. I have already pre-ordered the vinyl and I know scott ordered the cd. If you haven't yet heard this album (welcome to the blogiverse), its one of the years most anticipated albums and definitely lives up to the expectations. If for nothing else, buy it for the awesome album art.

Having recently rocked the DWTN charity show (of which you can see a portion here), Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver is so many people's favorite person. I was a little skeptical about how his surrestial (surreal + celestial, yeah?) music would translate to an outdoor festival setting. I hope that video is representative because I just got chills.

Once upon a time I was young and naive and thought that Animal Collective could never reproduce their sound live. This was circa Sung Tongs and I was a sophomore in High School. Forgive me. Despite having electronified every one of their songs, the immense creativity of their music translates into what looks like a one of a kind experience. And don't forget all the improvised vocal interplay (that maybe could be annoying but I still think is interesting). They seem to be reworking a lot of their songs to fit their new fancy which has translated to some really interesting reinterpretations.

Being as it is that Fleet Foxes have are homegrown heroes, I often feel that I can relate to the more pastoral elements in their music. That being said, I am elated at the chance to experience the affect that their songs will surely produce situated in the enormous landscape that is The Gorge.

Late Night

In addition to the Billboard Charts showin' some love for bands I love, There have been a few really good latenight-talk-show music performances lately. Compounding the glory that was Fleet Foxes' contribution to the rare indie band appearance on SNL a couple of weeks ago, M83 played the nostalgic feeling "Kim and Jessie" on Conan O'Brien last night. And(rew) Bird-man wet Letterman's pants with "Fitz and Dizzyspells" from his new Lp Noble Beast.
