When was the last time you were sitting around thinking, "Why isn't there a world beatbox competition?" Is it right now? Cause that is the wrong thing to wonder. There is in fact a Beatbox Battle Online World Championship and it was held on thursday. Believe me. The truly international competition was won by Canada's Julia Dales and she is legit. Beatboxbattle.com posted the audition tapes of some of ther winners. Here are the top two:

Well, Sara, Robbie and I are heading off to Sasquatch. We are planning to take a lot of photos and not all of us are going to the exact same shows so hopefully we can put together a few posts that are relatively representative of the whole festival for those unfortunate souls unable to attend. I haven't been to Sasquatch for four years and the last time I went, it hailed and my tent flooded and I missed the Shins. Lets hope nothing like that happens this time. Here is a taste (via past P4k festivals) of what a few of this years Sasquatch acts sound (and look) like performing at festivals.

Little Joy's self-titled debut album was easily one of my favorites from last year. Heretofore (I use that word ever chance I get), Little Joy has been known as (former Stroke's drummer) Fab Moretti's band. Now he is out (and performing under the Strokes moniker again) and Little Joy are still getting attention. I like that. I would like to encourage that behavior. Pavlov says salivate over the video.

This has absolutely nothing to do with music except for maybe the Jeoparody (see what I did there?) theme song. It's just ridiculously funny. Tom Hanks, so hot right now. Tom Hanks.



If you ever need to explain the concept of "ignored," you could adequately reference what I have heretofore (told ya) done to the Vivian Girls. Also, if you wanted to explain the concept of "short," you could reference this video. It clocks in it at an overwhelming 2:05 and the first 12 seconds are silent. Lo-fi jangly pop for the way too busy. But I actually really like this song. Its got the whole Deerhunter vibe to it and its fairly similar The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, for whom my love is well documented. Lastly, if you wanted to give a presentation on the concept of "panning," you could totally show this video.



Here we have friendly Sub Poppers The Vaselines performing at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg with a backing band that included members of Belle & Sebastian. This is a new song entitled “Picked a Cherry Tulip,” in which they say things about having nothing to say. Awesome.

Also, as a special note, the 35th annual Seattle International Film Festival begins this Today. Along with Bumbershoot, Hempfest, Sasquatch and Folklife, SIFF is one of the things that I love about Seattle in all its hippy-west-coast-arty-gloriousness. Definitely try to catch a film or two if you can. Its running through June 14th so you have some leeway as to when you go. I think we here at BCB might try to give you a few suggestions/reviews of some of the films if all goes well. For the time being, check out Three Imaginary Girls' SIFF coverage here.

If you aren't meeting you're suave quota lately, you might look forward to the new Martin Scorsese directed Frank Sinatra biopic. Entitled simply "Sinatra," the film is produced by Universal Pictures and the script is by screenwriter Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams). The film has been in the works for a while because of a lot of legal issues. For example, according to Billboard, Sinatra's "family members had to come to consensus on how to tell the story and, more importantly, just how much of the story to tell." Sounds complicated.

Sinatra's life does seem to lend it self toward a dramatic film.

"Raised during the Depression, he built a singing career that weathered many changes in popular culture, all while he racked up 31 gold records and countless other honors. He also had a successful career as an actor, proving naysayers wrong by earning an Oscar for 'From Here to Eternity.' His personal life was just as eventful. He suffered from depression and a bipolar disorder, was alleged to have connections to organized crime and was married four times, including to actresses Ava Gardner and Mia Farrow.

Iron and Wine Release Old Songs on New Album
and play Marymoor Park July 11

Iron and Wine has gained quite considerable popularity the last few years, mostly due to the well placed song on movie soundtracks or the overwhelming popularity of bearded folkies. With this fame, Sam Beam has expanded the sound of the band toward alt country--a far cry from the whispered melodies of earlier albums.
And while there are certainly gems on The Shepard's Dog, I myself am inclined towards the sound of Iron and Wine's humbler origins.
Well lucky me.
This week the band is releasing a two disc album of rarities and b-sides entitled "Around the Well", which collects many songs we have all heard (Such Great Heights, Trapeze Swinger, etc.) and some we haven't. It's like opening a treasure chest and finding...some iron... and a few bottles of wine...

Anyways, this summer the band is coming to Marymoor Park in Redmond for the "No Depression Festival" on Saturday July 11. Tickets are $45, and I can't think of a better way to spend a July 11 afternoon, can you?
