Haven't heard from Phoenix in a while. I think the last think was their half hearted "remix" of Grizzly Bear (speaking of bands I haven't heard of in a while). Apparently this third installment of the "Love Like a Sunset" series is to promote the bands Madison Square Garden show with Dirty Projectors later this month.
With Lady Gaga in a glittery, butt-baring catsuit and Yoko Ono sporting a statement hat, the pair performed two songs, backed by a Plastic Ono Band featuring Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, and Cornelius. Watch the duo take on Plastic Ono Band’s “The Sun Is Down” after the jump.
This clip for Innerspeaker bruiser "Lucidity", directed by Robert Hales, has a similar feel, as a weather balloon launches from the band's position in the Australian town of Midland and eventually returns to Earth, capturing some sick visuals along the way. "I’m wondering: what am I doing? What is a song even? I’m questioning, what’s the point of a song? Is a song antiquated? Does it have any power any more? The format itself — a narrative song with accompaniment — is really beyond me now."One can speculate whether these musings had direct affect on Adz or not, but if the songs on the album could be described in one word it would be "power." Probably the most jarring moment in the more than hour long record comes in "I Want to Be Well", a song that begins with Sufjan's standard whimsical air, only to deteriorate into a cycle of Stevens passionately declaring he's not "fucking around" - a phrase that certainly caused a few of the troubadour's more faithful fans to spew their morning cheerios across the kitchen table. It is this raw energy that really pushes Sufjan to new heights. His soul, previously buried under myriad layers of history, narrative, biblical allegories and the like, finally makes an appearance - and it's a bit more tortured than we ever imagined.

The Holy Forest is a record that I wrote and recorded in under 24 hours. I knew I wanted to make something that was along the same lines as the Valerie EP, but with a bit more song based. Where I wanted to keep Valerie more of an instrumental affair, this record features a lot more vocals and percussion.
The idea behind the record was to tell the story of a piece of land that was quite dear to my heart. Behind my parent's house was a mountainside forest that was full of wonder and inspiration. One afternoon some friends and I were wandering around it when we came upon a huge clearing, almost 200 feet wide. The trees gave way to huge stalks of uncut grass, and a hidden cove, complete with a looming rock face. People had definitely discovered it before we had, what with the discarded car batteries and rusted out bed frames. Some people saw it as a dump; we saw an oasis. For that summer, this place became my escape. I'd go to the meadow to think, to take in the sun, and to go be imaginative. It instantly became a muse, inspiring me to write countless songs and other works.
Once the summer ended, and I left home to go back to school, my parents told me that the forest was being cut down to make way for a housing development. A total Fern Gully experience. I was saddened to think that a place of such mystery and wonder would be replaced with sheer efficiency and logic. People need places to live right? Perhaps, but at what cost.
So over the span of four months, I saw glimpses of what was once a beautiful place, turn into a pile of dirt. The album cover is a collage of a picture of the once full forest, and one of my friend Adam standing over the wasteland it became.
This record is the story of this forest, as told by the trees themselves.
I hope you enjoy this record, and I hope it inspires you to find a place of wonder.
Climbing up to the attic space where Beat Connection’s equipment was set up, the band’s sound made more and more sense to me. They are basically practicing in the clouds, overlooking the entire U-District; it was incredible. After a quick sound check, grilled meats and a healthy amount of beer we started the camera and caught part one of the Beat Connection series.
Shaking Through is an awesome project, and I hope you guys can get involved. Right now, WXPN and Weathervane Music have partnered up to give up-and-coming bands an opportunity to record in a professional (and yes, beautiful, sun-drenched) studio here in Fishtown, Philadelphia - and keep the song and the learning experience with them. Any concentration of wilderness, growth, or life contained in a surviving ecosystem located in an urban setting is known as wild space. It is a non-domesticated area existing and dwelling as arcane emptiness. Wild space creates fear from the unknown yet gives context to conformability. Organisms grow and cultivate while going unnoticed. Wild space serves as the in between spaces in our lives.
