of Montreal (feat. Solange Knowles) on Jimmy Fallon

In the run up to the release of their new album False Priest, of Montreal have relased a trippy as expected trailer, a single and now performed another new track song live on Fallon. "Sex Karma" is a mid-tempo funky groove. It shifts through various instrumental sections with ease, letting the vocals fill all the gaps. It is a pretty good number for a duet with Solange whose indie cred, as we all know, runs pretty deep. Less logical are the Mimes in the background but of course nothing is ever unexpected for Kevin Barnes. Though he does look a little sheepish standing next to Solange who towers over him.

of Montreal also perform the previously released "Coquette Coquette" which you can download here and see here.

Wise Blood - Interview

Wise Blood - STRT SRNS

Christopher Laufman makes soulful, sample based jams out of Pittsburgh under the name Wise Blood. He has a Myspace with a couple thousand hits and a Free EP that is blowing up the blogosphere. Christopher and I recently discussed a few things via emails, including cemeteries, relation to Flannery O'Connor, and a new EP for the song featured here,

BCB: You recently moved to Pittsburgh from Houston. Why was that?
CL: I took a semester off from school, as of right now, I'm working in a cemetery.

BCB: What are you studying in school?
CL: I was looking into archaeology.

BCB: What is it like working in a cemetery?
CL: I enjoy working in a cemetery, it gives you a good perspective.

BCB: Given that your bandcamp name is Haze Motes, a character from Flannery O'Connor's novel Wise Blood which is also your project name, I assume you are a fan. Why did you choose that name and what is your connection with O'Connor?
CL: I like the name, I like its different meanings. And I heard that we might be related. That's why I got into her writing at a young age.

BCB: You are currently unsigned but I could easily see your EP getting picked up and distributed by a label. Cymbals Eat Guitars like you too. What are your aspirations for your music? Is this a career or a project?
CL: I have big plans for the music. Hopefully they work out. I don't want to give anything away.

BCB: I read that you took guitar lessons as a kid. what is the ratio of samples to instruments on the EP?
CL: The whole album is essentially built upon different samples that I pieced 2gether, it's only the last song, "MI + AMORE" that's played on guitar.

BCB: "+" clocks in at just over 10 minutes. Is the shorter EP form something you are partial to? Is this part of future music?
CL: I wouldn't say that the length of the EP is intentional, but maybe it's telling.

BCB: Your music on bandcamp is tagged as "future music." Could you elaborate on this at all?
CL: I like that term, I saw it used to describe the music that Joker makes. I think it's a label 2 aspire to.

BCB: Nostalgia is a word that gets kicked around in a lot of music descriptions these days and I have seen it in terms of your music. Is this something you think about when writing?
CL: I try not include any nostalgic aspects in my music, I think everyone should be looking forward. Although, it's inevitable that at some point it will creep in there.

BCB: Your music seems really soulful to me, especially the Prince-y vocals (not to mention the track four Motown reference). There are also a lot of sample based Panda Bear or Atlas Sound-esque loop repetitions. What music do listen to and what has influenced your own writing?
CL: I've been trying to listen to music that reflects what I'm trying to make. Anything thats melodic with interesting surroundings.

BCB: Do you perform any of you music live? Or has it been mostly a recording project. Would you ever be interested in touring (and playing a show here in Seattle?)
CL: Right now I'm in the process of getting the EP ready to play live. I would definitely be interested in taking it different places, including Seattle. As soon as its ready I'll get on stage. I'm actually taking a week to get the live show 2gether starting on August 17th with a friend of mine, after it's complete I'll be ready to get out there and breath new life into all the material.

BCB: You also were working on video accompaniment for your songs. Are you still working on that?
CL: Yeah, I'm still trying to get some video 2gether, it's taking longer than I thought though. There is going to be a video out with a new song before the release of the next EP, it will involve the efforts of different people across the world all coming together online and creating something great.

Talent such as Robin Pecknold possess is hard to come by. And as far as tour documentaries go, this one nearly perfectly captures the purity, profundity, and at times light spirit of Robin’s musical demeanor. The video was directed and produced by Robin’s brother Sean Pecknold who is nearly a god in his own regard. Beat Radio Covers Best Coast - "When Im With You"

Everybody loves Best Coast. Especially the west coast, which is the best coast. That is why we should all go see them play with Sonny and the Sunsets in late october. Beat Radio also loves Best Coast. The Cover Lovers recently posted their cover of the fantastic "When Im With You" and its really good. Definitely worth a listen. If you like that one, Beat Radio also have a couple of albums on their bandcamp (the Ratatat meets analog drums "Golden Age" is recommended).

Kanye Recites New Songs

"Lost in the World"/ "Chain Gang"

"Mama's Boyfriend"

I don't know what he has been up to recently but Kanye's new lyrics sound pretty solid a capella. He looks pretty snazzy too. Lots about slavery it sounds. "Mama's Boy" is certainly full of rage so it sounds like Kanye is taking the Eminem route in order to deal with things. This is really good stuff. Chilling in this format. If the rest of the album is like this, it could be his best work work to date. I can't wait to hear the beats.

Cuddle Up With: Secret Cities

When I first heard Secret Cities' single "Boyfriends" I immediately thought of Brandon. Maybe it was the cute whistles or the loveable lo-fi jangle but for whatever reason I knew Brandon would love it. I'm not sure if he does because he is half way across the world right now and I have yet to discuss the matter with him (so, do you?). The fact that he hasn't beaten me to posting about Secret Cities is, in retrospect, quite astounding.

Hailing from Fargo, a not-so-secret city that post-1996 has only been remembered for one thing, Secret Cities crafts a well balanced blend of funeral strings, harmonies, fuzzed percussion and simple lyrics. The songs on their debut Pink Graffiti (no relation) flow seamlessly, each track leaning slightly towards the next with a heavy rhythmic grace.

Its the type of music I would write if I could. Each vocal melody drops exactly where you want it to-- the first listen is like rereading a picture book from childhood; somehow you know what is coming next.
Childhood does seem to be the main stylistic inspiration for Pink Graffiti. Bells and whistles conjure up the playfulness of Sufjan but are juxtaposed with sad drawn out melodies. Like Arcade Fire, Secret Cities settles within a melodic chasm between happiness and melancholy that can really only be described as child-like. Their label sums it up quite nicely: "Pink Graffiti is (mostly) about Brian Wilson and young people".

The Buzz Box #11

I've been super busy so this post is a bit late in coming, but there has been some fantastic summery music emerging from the blogosphere the past few weeks. We also hear from previous buzzers Tennis, Yuck, and Twin Shadow who continue to drop excellent gems onto the blogs. For the pocket change we have tracks from a few blog-hyped hazers Dominant Legs, Still Corners, and Beige.

Intertextuality #4

The train was racing through tree tops that fell away at intervals and showed the sun standing, very red, on the edge of the farthest woods. Nearer, the plowed fields curved and faded and the few hogs nosing in the furrows looked like large spotted stones. Mrs. Wally Bee Hitchcock, who was facing Motes in this section, said that she thought the early evening like this was the prettiest time of day and she asked him if he didn’t think so, too.

Walter Sobcek - "She's Gone" video

Apparently based out of Paris and Berlin, Walter Sobcek is a bit of a mystery, producing only a few remixes and covers thus far (including one of the best 1901 remixes I have heard). Here they have a perfect specimen of R&B tinged synth-pop where vocoder verses give way to the creamy chorus of this Hall and Oates cover. Kind of like that lush, soulful, LA vibe Mayer Hawthorne was going for. There is a lot of 80's in this song (only without the reverbed drums, for which I am very thankful). It comes complete with a video featuring a John Hughes film, which exudes dreamy nostalgia. "She's Gone" may well be about our 80's and early 90's childhood. If childhood is a women, she is gone. And yet here we are ready to remember her absence. From the myspace:
THE STORY: Walter Sobcek is a man. He likes girls, like Traci Lords or Marilyn Jess. However, he is in love with Chelsea. A 20 year old girl. She is blonde. She is beautiful. She left him. To forget her, Walter also left.

Look for the EP in September.

Teen Daze

Strangely enough, the first time I meant to write about Teen Daze was without even hearing his music when he guest curated a post on Schmooze Blog. His selections included Baths, Toro y Moi and beautiful song by a band I had never heard of from Iceland, Parachutes. From these alone I knew it had to be good. And...it is. Straight up professional electronic, nostalgia drenched song craft. Pushed to the point of exhaustion, Teen Daze encourages you to keep going. Songs like "Hard Times Good Times" express this sentiment perfectly. Mid-track, chanting "you're the only one that sees me," the remaining instrumental minutes leave with that thought. To be seen by only on person is both tragic and comforting. And that is Teen Daze's music exactly. With beautiful covers of Twin Sister and Local Natives in the bag, Teen Daze is killing it.

Pacific – Narcissus Trailer

Pacific! are from (where else?) Gothenburg, Sweden, which is home to likes of Air France. And like the latter band, Pacific! effortlessly blend synth soundscapes and childlike wonder into a momentous (though not always excited) set of songs. Alternating delicate orchestral and vocal moments into their electronic background, they recall aspects of many artists (Air, Daft Punk, Imogen Heap) and yet everything sounds so fresh. They will be releasing their second album on September 13th. From their myspace:
Their anticipated sophomore LP, Narcissus...sees the duo move in more leftfield directions, drawing conceptual inspiration from the classic Greek myth in its story of unrequited love, unspoken truth and self-effacing emotion
Beautiful. I cant wait.

Akeboshi meets Stranglers.

When I was a junior in high school (2005-2006), I had a friend who was really into Anime and music. He showed me "Wind" by Akeboshi. I haven't heard this song in about 3 years, until today when I was watching He Died With a Felafel in His Hands and I heard "Golden Brown" by Stranglers. They have the same melody (if you don't count the extra beat in "Golden Brown") and they are both terrific. Not exactly the same, but enough to throw me into a fit of nostalgia. This very-part-time contributor could not be more excited alone at 11:30 on a Thursday night. Have a listen:

Intertextuality #3

The sea is so flat and cerulean that clouds seem to founder in it. Planing through their reflections Fox feels more skybound than waterborne as he bears in toward the lagoon.
Nothing moves ashore at White Point. There's only this prevailing painterly stillness. Deserted beach. Norfolk pines immobile. And boats languishing at their moorings.
Throttling down across the seagrass flats he feels watched but he knows he's home free-- there's nothing to be caught with, no fish, no lobsters, no abalone. He cuts his motors and tilts them to glide in to the shallows. His wake folds on itself like poured treacle. He thinks of the curve of her neck. Smells saltbrush, pigface, iodine. The world feels becalmed and dreamy.

Beat Connection - Free EP

When I first heard Seattle's own Beat Connection, I had a hard time believing they weren't from Sweden (listen up Sincerely Yours). They recently sent me a copy of their debut EP, Surf Noir, which they are self-releasing for free and it does impress. I had heard the closer, "Same Damn Time" previously and a couple mixes and mash-ups (including the stellar Washed Out/Biggie Smalls "It Was All a Dream"), but Beat Connection truly know how to link songs together.

The Eps eight tracks flow together effortlessly, alternating moods between overjoyed and reflective. The album begins with "Sunburn," a foot-tapper that pivots around a jangly guitar surf rock hook. The song serves to set the scene and is almost pure tension, the melody never granting a sufficient release. This gives way to sounds of seagulls announcing the album's best track "In the Water". The song is everything you want for summer. It exudes the balearic nostalgia of Air France and displays the patience of LCD Soundsystem. Beat Connection don't need to force anything and because of that, their timing is impeccable. When "In the Water" explodes again just before the two minute mark, I am caught off guard every time and yet find myself smiling ear to ear. The song demands movement and dancing. And not absentmindedly. It implores you to really mean it.

The shortest track, "Wildheart," is the perfect breather after the ecstasy of "In the Water," sounding like some music from an old Books demo. From this point the EP takes a turn for the pensive, though without forsaking a strong backbeat. The spiking-and-falling melodies of "Theme from Yours Truly" or the slow beat of "Fresh Touch," which gives way seamlessly to "Silver Screen" (a close second best), give you the sense that Beat Connection have done their homework. They have a definite grasp of the electronic music's history as a genre, supporting this knowledge with contemporary indie/pop/chillwave soundscapes. Unlike a lot of more recent acts, they are far more than a one trick pony. They can write one minutes songs or seven minute ones. They can make you dance or make you sit back and dream. All this goes to say, keep your eyes out for Beat Connection in the future. Pick up their free EP and enjoy.

Eternal Summers

The immortal GvB just reminded me about a band I have been meaning to write about, Eternal Summers. They hail from Roanoke, Va. and their myspace says they play "dream punk," which is about right. Think Best Coast, Vivian Girls-type girl-led rock music. Eternal Summers also have the capacity for heartbreaking melodies and light harmonies in short, two minute bursts. With an Ep and a (free) single under their belt, look out for their full length "Silver" in mid to late September. For now enjoy the new song, "Pure Affection".

BCB's Favorites of 2010 Thus Far

Well its about 2010.5 (actually, its 2009.5 to be technical) and its time for more lists! Brandon and I recently composed our lists of favorite albums and EP's and lo and behold they were quite similar. Instead of just listing out our hierarchical impulses, we are just going to lay out the albums we agreed upon.

Top two albums:
Beach House: Teen Dream
Joanna Newsom: Have One On Me

I (Scott) had Teen Dream atop my list and Brandon had Newsom's triple LP, but we both agree that these are the best albums of the year thus far. I would say future '10 releases from Panda Bear, Radiohead, and Fleet Foxes are the only chances of supplanting this pair.

Other agreements (in no particular order):
The Tallest Man On Earth: The Wild Hunt
Morning Benders: Big Echo
[mp3] Excuses
Owen Pallett: Heartland
Mountain Man: Made the Harbor
[mp3] Soft Skin
Tame Impala: Innerspeaker
MGMT: Congratulations
ceo: White Magic

Best EP's thus far:
Twin Sister: Color Your Life
Memoryhouse: The Years
Oberhofer: oO0OooOo
Active Child: Curtis Lane
Grouper: Grouper/Roy Montgomery Split

Nathan Williams has put a lot of thought into this new record and it shows. There is actually a variety of moods and textures on this album! If you lived through the '90s on early Green Day, Weezer or the like, this will be a familiar and nostalgic update on similar themes.

Cuddle Up With: Sonny and the Sunsets

There are a number of artists that I have been meaning to write about but there are none that I am more excited about than Sonny and the Sunsets.

They make music perfect for a lazy summertime afternoon bbq. Like you can't imagine anything could be all that bad even though you know there are bad things but because you know about all the bad things you know that they are not so bad that you cant sing these songs. Naturally they are from San Francisco, which has consistently turned out non-electronic chill music (for a doo-wop feel, check the video below for "Strange Love"). They have the harmonies down for sure. They exude the same sort of playfulness that made moldy peaches so fun a few years back, only without the self-hating irony. Apparently they put on a good show too.

They released their debut album Tomorrow is Alright on Soft Abuse but it was recently picked up by Fat Possum (home to the likes of Wavves and Andrew Bird). They will re-release the album on August 17 with a wider distribution. Stay tuned.

Stream New El Guincho EP

I've always been so-so on El Guincho. Labeled almost immediately as the spanish Panda Bear, his debut LP Alegranza!  was indeed heavily influenced by the tribal trends of Animal Collective and the cyclical sampling of Noah Lennox. It was a pretty good album, but it didn't last too long for me.

El Guincho now returns with a series of EPs that re-envision, according to his website, "various South American standards and lost classics." The first of these, Pirates de Sudamerica, is streaming below. It doesn't venture too far from earlier sounds, although it tends to adhere to more traditional pop structures rather than endless loops. I'd say its a nice a change for the band as they stray away from incriminating buzzband influences. Take a listen and stay tuned for more in the future.
